Around 78,000 state government employees did not report for duty on Tuesday, responding to calls by various associations, including the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Organization and Government Employees Organization (JACTTO-GEO), which organized a one-day strike in Tamil Nadu with various demands.
Of about 8.5,000 employees who are attached to the Integrated Finance and Human Resource Management System (IFHRMS), more than 78,000 have been reported absent, official sources said. The 8.5 lakh employees do not include those working in public sector undertakings (PSUs), universities and other parastatal agencies.
In Chennai, JACTTO–GEO staged a protest at the Ezhilagam complex, which houses several units of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department. Their protest highlighted their various demands, with the primary demand being the restoration of the old pension system for civil servants.
Business in many government offices was marginally affected as some employees did not report for duty. Among the departments, the hardest hit were deals involving employees from the commercial tax department, officials said. Official affairs were not much affected in the state capital, including the secretariat.
Absence report
When asked if the protest was only related to service-related demands or work related to special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, as demanded by some sections, officials said the reports received were only about unauthorized absences regardless of the type of demands. The absentee percentage was about 8-9%, they added.
