The Telangana government has decided to distribute one million sarees free of cost to an equal number of eligible women across the state.
The distribution of sarees will begin from Wednesday, which coincides with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy accompanied by Panchayat Raj Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka reviewed the saree distribution arrangement with senior officials on Tuesday. The Chief Minister, who will formally launch the Indiramma saris scheme on Wednesday, directed the officials concerned to ensure that all eligible women are covered under the scheme. Saris woven by Sircilla weavers will be distributed as part of the programme.
Since knitting one million sarees takes time, he directed officials to implement the scheme in two phases. Steps should be taken to cover women in rural areas in the first phase followed by distribution to women in urban areas in the first week of March. Officials have been given a deadline of December 9 to cover rural women under the scheme.
There should be no compromise when it comes to saree quality and officials should use technology to ensure transparency in the implementation of the system. The Chief Minister ensured that the system was continuously monitored till its completion. Mr. Revanth Reddy will formally start the saree distribution after paying tributes to the former Prime Minister on Wednesday. The launch will be followed by his interaction with rural women through video conferencing from the secretariat in the afternoon.
Ministers, MLAs and MLCs have been asked to attend the video conference from the respective district collectors.
