Worrying view for India: Star spinner pulled out with ankle injury against Netherlands in T20 World Cup

India suffered an injury scare during their Women’s World T20 match against the Netherlands on Wednesday when Shreyanka Patil had to leave the field after injuring her ankle while bowling first. The incident occurred in the sixth through the Dutch inning. Shreyanka played just one delivery when she injured herself trying to stop the ball in the field. After Phebe Molkenboer played the ball to leg, Shreyanka chased it from midwicket to prevent further runs. She twisted her ankle in the process and immediately appeared to be in pain. Medics went to the field to assess her condition.Shreyanka was unable to put weight on her right leg and was eventually carried off the field on a stretcher. The injury came as a setback for the off-spinner, who only recently returned to cricket after spending more than a year on the sidelines due to multiple injuries. She made her comeback during this year’s Women’s Premier League and entered the World Cup looking to impress.Earlier, Indian batsmen had put Netherlands under pressure as they posted 209 for 5.Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma gave India a strong start after Netherlands opted to field first. The pair added 115 runs for the opening wicket in 70 balls.Mandhana scored 74 off 47 balls to register her second consecutive fifty-plus score in the tournament, while Shafali hit 55 off 38 balls, her maiden half-century of the competition.India made two changes to the playing eleven, replacing Arundhati Reddy with Yastika Bhatia for Bharti Fulmali and Nandani Sharma.Shafali led the charge during the powerplay as India amassed 59 runs in the first six overs. The Dutch bowlers struggled for consistency, allowing the Indian opener to score freely. Among the highlights of the opening stage was her perfect ride over extra cover pacer Isabel Woning.Dutch captain Babette de Leede frequently switched bowlers in an attempt to slow down the scoring. Myrthe van den Raad also struggled with her line as she conceded six wides in the sixth over.Mandhana picked up the pace after the over and attacked the spinners as well as the seamers. She hit four boundaries in four balls during the 15th over bowling Silver Siegers.Although Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur could not capitalize after the openers’ departure, late contributions from Richa Ghosh, who scored 20 off 8 balls, and Deepti Sharma, who made 10 off 2 balls, helped India reach 209 for 5 – their highest total in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
