The Kollam City Police has launched a month-long campaign against narcotics

In an effort to eradicate drug abuse, the Kollam City Police has launched a month-long awareness campaign against narcotics in connection with the nationwide initiative ‘Operation Toofan – The Narco Hunt’.

The official launch of the drive was held at the Government Higher Secondary School in Bhoothakkulam, Paravur on Wednesday.

District Superintendent of Police (Kollam City) Hemalatha M inaugurated the function while Additional SP Dinil JK presided over the function.

Ajeena R. Sivan, Counselor from Sakhi, conducted an awareness session that educated the audience on the serious health, social and economic impacts of substance abuse and outlined methods to protect the youth from falling into drug traps.

The campaign is designed to build a powerful community-led movement against narcotics in Chathannur sub-division.

It aims to actively involve local schools, colleges, residents’ associations, business organizations, Kudumbashree units and youth groups.

After the launch, similar awareness campaigns are scheduled to begin in Karunagappally on June 18 and under Kollam sub-division on June 19. Over the next month, a number of events including awareness classes, seminars, flash mobs and bike rallies will be organized at various educational institutions, bus stands and autorickshaw stands.

Underlining the enforcement side of the proceedings, the police revealed that 269 cases had already been registered under Operation Toofan between June 1 and June 16. Of these, 129 cases were reported in Kollam sub-division, 63 in Karunagapally sub-division and 77 in Chathannur sub-division. The breakdown of crimes includes 59 cases of drug trafficking, 110 cases of marijuana users and 100 cases of possession and sale of prohibited tobacco products.

Law enforcement also seized a significant amount of contraband during this period, including 8.47 grams of MDMA, 157.39 grams of marijuana, and 260 milligrams of methamphetamine. District Superintendent of Police Hemalatha M said that the active cooperation of the public is absolutely essential to build a drug-free society and urged citizens to report any information regarding the distribution or use of narcotics to the police immediately.
