Power cuts are likely on a limited scale till June 30, says the Kerala State Electricity Board

Power cuts are likely to be on a limited scale between 6 pm and midnight till June 30 due to the acute power shortage experienced nationwide, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) said.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Energy Minister Sunny Joseph and attended by senior officials including Energy Secretary and KSEB Chairman and CEO MG Rajamanickam to review the situation.

Due to a combination of factors, Kerala will face a shortfall of 900 megawatts (MW) by June 30, KSEB said. Limited cargo restrictions were imposed in some parts of the state on June 16 (Tuesday), the company said.

Dry temperature conditions associated with El Nino increased the demand for energy across India. In Kerala’s case, the monsoon months are also the time when the state is expected to return electricity obtained under ‘swap’ and bank arrangements from other states to meet summer demand.

The south-west monsoon, which is only gaining strength, has not brought cooler weather. Although KSEB had projected peak demand to drop to 4,100 MW, it is hovering around 4,900 MW. There is also an increase in daily electricity consumption by 10 million units (mu), KSEB said.
