When VD Satheesan presents his government’s revised budget for the 2026-27 fiscal in the State Assembly on Friday (June 19, 2026), he will become the third Congress chief minister in Kerala to do so.

Mr. Satheesan will present the budget as he also holds the finance portfolio.

R. Shankar was the first party president to present the state budget. He presented the budgets for 1963-64 and 1964-65 after taking over as the first Chief Minister of the Congress state following the resignation of Pattom A. Thanu Pillai.

Oommen Chandy, the then chief minister, presented the budget for 2016-17 after the resignation of KM Mani, who held the finance portfolio.

Both Mr Shankar and Mr Chandy previously held finance portfolios before becoming chief ministers later in their careers.

Mr. Satheesan will also have the distinction of being the second MLA representing Paravur constituency to present the budget. KT George, who held the finance and legal portfolios in the C. Achutha Menon ministry, was the first MLA from Paravur to introduce it.

C. Achutha Menon, who was the Finance Minister in the first EMS Namboodiripad Ministry in Kerala, presented the first State Budget on June 7, 1957. When Mr. Satheesan presents his Budget next June, it will be the 79th State Budget.
