Just two days after at least 12 people died and several others were injured in an explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort, the Gurugram police ordered housing societies to submit a list of people from Jammu and Kashmir and foreigners staying there.
House owners and Paying Guest (PG) accommodation have also been asked to provide details and maintain a register of tenants and visitors.
However, officials said the order was part of a security verification drive ahead of the New Year and Republic Day celebrations, Hindustan Times reported.
District Magistrate (DM) Ajay Kumar, who issued the order on November 12, which will remain in force till January 31, 2026, said the measure was part of a coordinated security plan ahead of national celebrations.
“Gurugram is a cosmopolitan city and our intention is only to ensure safety for everyone through structured authentication,” Kumar said.
Vishnu Prasad, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AKT), said they are asking who came from where and how long they stayed here.
“This includes people from Jammu and Kashmir as well as foreigners,” Prasad said, adding, “It is purely for security reasons and is a routine check.”
Police are also maintaining high alert in Gurugram and are reviewing the security program after the deadly blast.
Meanwhile, a resident said the order may raise unnecessary suspicion against people from certain regions.
“We all want security, but it should not come at the cost of profiling the entire community. We should focus on suspicious behavior, not identity,” Sana Khan, a resident of Sector 56, told Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
The Cabinet called the car blast a “heinous terrorist incident” and ordered investigating authorities to deal with the case “with complete urgency and professionalism”.
It said the situation continued to be “closely monitored” at the highest levels of government.
Earlier, the owner of the car in which the blast took place near the Red Fort was also arrested in Gurugram. Md Salman sold his car to a person in Okhla. However, the car was registered in his name and had a Haryana registration plate.
