Bangladesh took complete control of the first Test against Ireland in Sylhet after a dominant batting on Day 2, led by Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s brilliant unbeaten 169. Through the stumps, the hosts reached 338 for 1 in 85 overs to secure a 52-run lead after Ireland’s first innings 286.
Ireland resumed the morning at 270 for 8 but could only add 16 runs before being bowled out. Hasan Mahmud and Taijul Islam quickly cleaned up the tail and ensured that Bangladesh entered their batting innings with momentum.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the outstanding bowler with 3 for 50 while Hasan Murad and Taijul took two wickets each. Paul Stirling (60) and debutant Cade Carmichael (59) had put up some resistance earlier but Ireland’s late collapse left them with an impressive score.
Bangladesh vs Ireland 1st Test Day 2 Highlights
Bangladesh’s response was nothing short of dominant. Openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam put together a brilliant 168-run stand – the fourth-highest opening partnership in Bangladesh’s Test history. The pair blunted the Irish bowlers with composure and precision, setting the tone for the innings.
Shadman, looking excellent, hit nine fours and a six in his fluent 104-ball 80 before being caught behind by Matthew Humphreys, Ireland’s lone wicket taker of the day.
JOY TORTURES IRELAND
Joy, meanwhile, was unflappable on the other end. He brought up his third Test hundred from 190 balls, showing patience, timing and maturity beyond his years. The right-hander continued to dominate after reaching the milestone, adding boundaries to his list and keeping the scoreboard moving alongside Mominul Haque.
Batting with characteristic composure, Mominul remained unbeaten on 80 at the stumps and complemented Joy’s fluid stroke play superbly. Their unbroken partnership of 170 runs for the second wicket left Ireland’s bowlers deflated as Bangladesh’s total continued to rise throughout the day.
None of the Irish bowlers could find consistent breakthroughs on a quiet pitch. Humphreys finished with 1 for 78 while McBrine and McCarthy were wicketless despite long spells.
With nine wickets still in hand and both set batsmen looking comfortable, Bangladesh are poised to extend their lead significantly on Day 3. A big first innings total now seems inevitable as the hosts dominate the opening Test of the series.
