Panic gripped a school in Bingipura near Bannerghatta on Monday afternoon after a loud explosion rang out from the school’s toilet, raising fears of a bomb blast.
The incident came shortly before reports of a car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort led to heightened security across the country.
The explosion scared students, staff and nearby residents. The school management quickly checked the premises and confirmed that the sound was caused by firecrackers and not an explosive device.
Some students may have done it out of spite.
Police officers from Bannerghatta police station rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. They interviewed school management and reviewed CCTV footage to identify those responsible. Classes were suspended for the day as nervous parents gathered on campus.
Later on Tuesday, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh announced a city-wide high alert in response to the incident in Delhi. Security has been tightened at all major public places, including airports, railway and bus stations, metro stations, shopping malls, hotels and lodges. He appealed to people not to panic and beware of rumours.
“All DCPs, ACPs and jurisdictional police have been instructed to enforce nakabandis, conduct thorough vehicle checks and be alert for any suspicious activity,” Mr. Singh said. He urged citizens to remain calm, cooperate with security personnel and report any unusual behavior to the authorities immediately.
