In light of increasing cases of cyber fraud, with numerous attempts and cases of digital arrests reported in recent weeks across Uttar Pradesh, police officials on Tuesday (June 16, 2026) advocated for a more standardized and intelligence-based response model, quick blocking of accounts and outreach to vulnerable residents as security measures to mitigate the menace.

“The risk of digital arrest and cybercrime is really on the rise as fraudsters contact individuals and falsely arrest them with digital arrests. The entire network of hybrid cyber frauds operates at a transnational level through syndicates. As AI voice and video spoofing is expected to escalate future risks, it is imperative that individuals do independent verification by contacting the official police and Vine Bank helpline. Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), in the UP Police.

Mr. Singh called for a month-long cyber awareness campaign in every district. “Awareness in schools, colleges, banks, panchayats, housing welfare associations (RWAs), markets and coaching centres, as well as awareness through posters in the local language, radio messages and videos on social media is essential to reach a large section of the population. Special campaigns for senior citizens and women like never share One Time Password (OTP) and ‘Call 1930’ campaigns of Immediate, they can also help nullcyberify the Immediate said.

Mr. Singh further added, “It is important for us to maintain a state-level threat intelligence database. In addition, we have to identify duplicate phone numbers, mule accounts, phishing domains and IP clusters. Coordinate with I4C for interstate and international networks. Issue weekly alerts to areas. Maintain platform/bank/telco hub directory3. Conduct free cyber incident response1 and 0 cyber drills1. process monthly reports on hybrid cybercrime trends,”.

Asked how big the threat from cyber crime syndicates is, he added: “Hybrid cybercrime is a threat to citizens’ complete digital identity. Gmail, iCloud, WhatsApp, mobile numbers and social media accounts are now as vulnerable as bank accounts. Once these accounts are compromised, the victim can suffer financial loss, identity theft, extortion, damage to reputation and other targeting of family members.

“Uttar Pradesh Police already has important mechanisms for cybercrime, including Cybercrime Headquarters, District Cybercrime Squads, Helpline 1930, cybercrime.gov.in reporting and I4C National Coordination. The next step should be to convert these mechanisms into a faster, more standardized and intelligence-led response model.”

Mr. Singh further emphasized that prevention through public education is the recommended approach. “React quickly through 1930 Cyber Cells and District Cyber Cells. Freeze funds through bank coordination. Monitor networks through telecommunications, platforms and financial intelligence. Escalate interstate and international networks through I4C. Prosecute using properly preserved digital evidence. All counties should consider hybrid cybercrime a priority category as it affects not only money but also complete digital identity, dignity and security citizens,” he said.
