Kozhikode is gearing up for the 2027 census

As part of the nationwide preparations for Census 2027, Kozhikode District Collector MS Madhavikutty has urged residents to complete the online exercise between June 16 and June 30 to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection.

The self-enumeration process began in Kerala on Tuesday (June 16). The theme of Census 2027 is “Janakshemam Censusiloode”. Addressing the media, Ms. Madhavikutty said that the information collected during the census forms the basis for planning social measures and development programmes.

She said the census would be done in two phases. The first phase, which includes house listing and flat census operations, will be conducted in Kerala during July 2026 as part of a nationwide exercise scheduled for April to September 2026.

The Collector said the district has completed mapping of more than 5,205 blocks with a list of houses and deployed 4,602 enumerators and 888 wardens. The self-enumeration facility allows residents to submit details online before the enumerator visits their homes.

After registering and verifying with a one-time password, users can identify their place of residence on a digital map, answer a questionnaire and submit information.

The 11-digit self-enumeration identification number generated upon submission must be shared with the enumerator during the field visit. Census 2027, the 16th census conducted in India since 1872 and the eighth since independence, would mark a significant shift towards digital data collection. The census, originally planned for 2021, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exercise is being conducted under the Office of the Chief Registrar and Census Commissioner of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Directorate of Census Operations is coordinating the activities in Kerala.
