Congress leader M. Lakshmana has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to address the woes of tobacco farmers in Mysuru who have complained of low prices.
Mr Lakshmana, who unsuccessfully contested the last election from the Mysuru Lok Sabha constituency, said he visited the tobacco auction platform in Periyapatna on Monday (November 10) after hearing about the farmers’ protest.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Lakshmana said that the tobacco grown in the Mysuru region is of excellent export quality. However, the tobacco fetched farmers only ₹260-300 per kg, while the lower-quality tobacco grown in the neighboring state fetched ₹450-460 per kg.
He asked the chief minister to intervene in the matter and help farmers get better prices for their produce.
