The first two-day Ocean Decade Tsunami Program (ODTP) conference began on Monday at the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) campus in Pragathinagar. The conference will focus on research development and an implementation plan to develop warning systems capable of issuing actionable and timely tsunami warnings from all identified sources to 100% of threatened coastlines in less than 10 minutes.
Scientists from across the country and abroad will also discuss plans to make all vulnerable coastal communities tsunami-ready and resilient by 2030 through programs such as the IOC-UNESCO Tsunami Ready Recognition Program (TRRP), according to director TM Balakrishnan Nair.
Last week, INCOIS organized the three-day Fourth Triennial Congress of the Federation of Indian Geoscience Associations (FIGA) – FIGA 2025 with a focus on “Geosciences for a Blue Economy”, which brought together geoscientists, oceanographers, fisheries experts, policymakers and stakeholders to discuss collaboration and innovation to address issues of national and international importance.
The participants included top scientists including Principal Science Secretary to the Central Government Ajay Kumar Sood, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences M. Ravichandran, President of FIGA and Director of the North-East Institute of Science and Technology Virendra M. Tiwari, a press release said.
