The Local Government Department has identified new sites for setting up regional sanitary waste incinerators in Kerala after finding the earlier sites unsatisfactory. Each plant will have a capacity of 20 tonnes per day and will supply multiple districts. The plants are now proposed to come up at Piravanthur in Kollam district, Brahmapuram in Ernakulam district, Kuttippuram in Malappuram district and Kadannappalli in Kannur district.
Clean Kerala Company Ltd. (CKCL) will construct each of the proposed plants on a plot of 50 cents under a suitable Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The department had earlier identified Kottarakara in Kollam district, Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district, Kuttippuram and Kadannappalli to bridge the gap in the existing decentralized sanitary waste management system.
As the implementation of the project at Muvattupuzha faced difficulties, the Kochi Corporation was directed by the government to set aside 1 acre of land adjacent to the existing incinerator at Brahmapuram, already earmarked in the future development master plan, for setting up the proposed regional sanitary waste incinerator. Since the site earlier identified at Kottarakara was found unsatisfactory, 50 cents of land from one acre land of CKCL at Piravanthur (KINFRA Park) was identified for the Kollam regional facility.
The Kollam regional facility will serve Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts, while the Ernakulam facility will serve Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki districts. The Malappuram facility is expected to cater to the requirements of Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts and the Kannur facility is expected to serve Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
Mission Suchitwa further recommended that stalled and small-scale sanitary waste incinerator projects be halted and sanitary waste from local authorities directed to proposed regional facilities to ensure optimal use of resources.
