A 12-year-old pregnant sloth bear died in the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) on Saturday due to ill health.
IGZP Curator G. Mangamma said that in the last few days, the animal, which was in its fifth month of pregnancy, had stopped taking porridge but was consuming fruits, dates and bread. “The animal also showed some vaginal discharge and showed signs of abortion four days ago. The cause of death was septicemic shock caused by the mummified fetus inside the uterus. Despite prompt medical attention and constant monitoring by veterinary staff, the animal could not be revived,” Ms Mangamma said.
A zoo veterinarian performed an autopsy and findings confirmed septicemia due to complications related to the mummified fetus, she said, adding that they are committed to providing the highest standards of veterinary care and monitoring to all of its animal residents.
