Several properties associated with Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee have come under the control of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The notices were issued under Section 400(1) of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, where the civic body sought documents related to the approval of the building plan and an explanation as to whether permission had been received for further construction.
The civic body is administered by the Trinamool Congress but notices have been issued to Mr. Banerjee. Over the past few days, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has been talking about properties owned by the Trinamool Congress general secretary and other party leaders.
Searching for details
On Monday (May 18, 2026), Mr. Adhikari said he sought details about the Trinamool leaders’ qualities from the Municipal Affairs Department and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Commissioner.
“The first is Beleghat’s Raju Naskar, who has 18 properties. The second is Kasba’s Sona Pappu, who has 24 properties. The third is Bhatija (nephew in Hindi), Abhishek Banerjee. There are 14 properties registered in the name of Leaps and Bounds, four in his own name and six in his father JaAved Khan’s (Trinamool’s Kasba MLA) who has 90 properties,” the chief minister said.
Earlier, an FIR was registered at Bidhannagar North Cyber Crime Police Station against a complaint filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar. The complaint alleged that between April 27 and May 3, he made provocative speeches and threatened Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Moved HC to quash FIR
Mr. Banerjee on Monday filed an application in the Calcutta High Court to quash the FIR lodged against him for the alleged inflammatory remarks. Senior advocate and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee said the matter is likely to be heard later this week before the Saugata Bhattacharyya court.
Following his defeat in the West Bengal Assembly polls, Abhishek Banerjee has been on the receiving end of criticism from several BJP leaders, including state president Samik Bhattacharya, who mocked the Trinamool leader for his absence from the venue to campaign in the Falta Assembly constituency, which will go to polls on May 21.
