An employee of a city-based private firm who had booked an escort service online was allegedly honey-trapped and extorted by the accused over ₹1.5 crore.
Acting on the complaint, the South East Cyber Crime Police registered an FIR against the woman, charging her under the IT Act and also under Sections 318 (cheating), 308 (extortion) and 319 (cheating by impersonation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the complaint, the victim visited a website on Friday where he came across the profile of a woman named Anshi who shared her mobile number offering escort services. After exchanging messages, they agreed to meet at a hotel in Koramangala and he booked a room where she came and met him.
After inquiring about services, the woman called someone who identified himself as a cyber crime officer and said the woman who came to meet him was also an officer.
The man informed the victim that it was a stabbing and that he could be charged with the relevant sections, which could carry six years in prison.
When the man tried to apologize, he claimed that the charge would be dropped if he paid ₹5 lakh. The victim negotiated and reduced the amount to ₹3,000. The woman later shared bank account details and a scanner to transfer money online. The victim transferred only ₹1.56 lakh through multiple online transfer attempts, while the rest of the transactions could not be completed as he exceeded his transaction limit.
The accused allegedly later took a video of the victim’s statement stating that he had used an escort service and assured to pay ₹3 million. The accused left the hotel room with a warning that the video would be uploaded to social media if he did not pay.
The victim shared his ordeal with his friends who suggested he contact the police. The police launched a search.
