Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Hitendra R. visited a private hospital in Belagavi on Saturday to inquire about the health of policemen who were injured in a stone-pelting incident near Hattaragi toll booth in Hukkeri taluk of Belagavi district during the sugarcane farmers’ protest on Friday.
Mr. Hitendra later told reporters that 11 policemen were injured. Despite various measures to prevent any untoward incident during the farmers’ protest, it happened and he rushed to oversee the situation and inquire about the health of the staff.
He said they were examining the surveillance footage and a case had already been registered at the Yamakanamaradi police station.
Responding to a query, the ADGP clarified that there were no instructions to break through the protesting farmers and only efforts were made to control the swelling crowd.
“We are also looking into the possibility of miscreants. Everything is being checked,” he said.
He said around four state transport buses and several police vehicles were damaged during the incident.
He further clarified that no arrests have been made yet and they will take action after verifying various other video clips.
Mr. Hitendra was accompanied by IGP Northern Range Chetan Singh Rathore, Commissioner of Police Belagavi Bhushan Borase and Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar Guled during his visit to the hospital.
