Rotten lettuce stored in a cooler, unmarked cut vegetables beyond their declared shelf life, presence of flies in the food preparation area and poor maintenance of washing facilities were among several food safety violations found during an inspection at a Metro outlet in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Kondapur on Tuesday.
The inspection was carried out by the food safety team of the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) as part of their ongoing monitoring of food safety across Cyberabad.
Officials found that incoming raw vegetables were not properly inspected at the time of purchase. Chopped vegetables, including onions, tomatoes and lettuce, were stored without labels, with some items found past their declared use-by date. Food waste was observed on the prep floor, while flies were noted in the food prep area.
The inspection team also found that the sink and washing surfaces were poorly maintained. Certificates of medical fitness for food handlers, food test reports and water analysis reports were not available during the inspection. Food handlers were also found to have insufficient awareness of safe food handling practices.
Rotten and unmarked vegetables were disposed of on the spot as part of immediate corrective measures. Officials said the facility would be issued an “Improvement Notice” for violations found and necessary corrective measures would be taken.
