
The Educational Multimedia Research Center (EMMRC) at the University of Calicut (CU) has for the first time developed six Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in various subjects in Malayalam.
According to EMMRC officials, these courses are in the most advanced forms of knowledge such as “Geo-informatics: Introduction”, “Green Chemistry”, “Medieval Kerala: upto 12th century”, “Kerala Tourism: Heritage and Culture”, “Concepts of Tourism” and “Kerala Sustainable Development Model”. The content was prepared by experts in the respective fields. MOOCs are courses available over the Internet and can be followed by a large number of people.
Course on Chemistry prepared by PR Jyothi, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam, Ernakulam; Geoinformatics by VK Brijesh, Associate Professor, Department of Geology, MES Ponnani College, Ponnani, Malappuram; History PS Manoj Kumar, Professor, Department of History, Sri C. Achutha Menon Government College, Thrissur; and on Tourism PV Sanoop Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Tourism and Tourism Management, Pazhassi Raja College, Pulppally, Wayanad, and S. Anujith, Assistant Professor, Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, Amal College of Advanced Studies, Nilambur, Malappuram.
EMMRC officials say that even textbooks in Malayalam are scarce or non-existent in these subjects. The lessons of each subject will be supplemented with video presentations. These courses were developed based on the syllabus of the newly launched four-year bachelor’s programs. They will have credit points similar to those of FYUGP. The courses will be available on the SWAYAM online platform. Students can register on the platform for free and credit points earned by writing exams can be added to the academic credit bank.
EMMRC officials say that enrollment for these courses will begin in December and the study material will be available from January. More details are available at www.emmrccalicut.org
Calicut University EMMRC was the first in the country to develop a MOOC in sign language. It was also the first university and EMMRC to develop a mobile application for higher education.
