Legendary Australia captain Meg Lanning has hailed Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma for playing a key role in their triumph in the Women’s World Cup 2025. Deepti was one of the key members of India’s World Cup squad as she was also named the Player of the Tournament for her all-round show.
She scored 215 runs from seven innings with three half-centuries and also finished as the tournament’s top wicket-taker with 22 wickets from nine innings at an average of 20.40. After her sensational performance, Meg Lanning praised Deepti’s ability to influence games with both bat and ball at various stages of the game.
“Now she’s able to really impact games with both bat and ball. And the other really good thing for the Indian team is that it can be at different points in the innings. There’s no real set way for her to be successful. It can be across the game,” Lanning told ICC Review.
Lanning also said that it is a luxury for any captain to have a player who can perform under pressure and called Deepti an important player for India.
“Having someone like that in your side who can perform under pressure and at any point in the game, you know, she’s shown that she can do that quite consistently. So no doubt (she) has become a very important player for India,” she added.
Deepti saved her best for the final against South Africawhich put up a well-built score of 58 (58) to take India to a good score of 298/7 after being asked to bat first. She further recorded figures of 5/39 in 9.3 overs with the ball, dismissing the big wickets of Laura Wolvaardt, Annerie Dercksen, Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk.
After her remarkable World Cup campaign, Deepti also moved up one place in the ICC ODI all-rounders’ rankings to occupy the fourth spot with 392 ratings. Deepti’s achievements were recognized along with opener Smriti Mandhana and batsman Jemimah Rodrigues, with all three named in the ICC Team of the Tournament.
