Farmers led by Honorary President of Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha Chamaras Malipatil staged a protest outside Deputy Commissioner’s office in Raichur on Tuesday.

This forced the authorities to close the main gate for a while.

The farmers demanded immediate release of outstanding dues for purchases of jowar at the centers set up by the state government.

Farmers sold jowar in shopping centers three months ago. However, the amount for the purchase of jowar has not been disclosed yet. Hence, it is difficult for the farmers to meet the expenses of purchasing seeds and fertilizers for the kharif season, he said.

Mr. Malipatil said that the district was facing shortage of fertilizers and demanded that the state government should immediately solve the problem by supplying adequate fertilizer.

He strongly opposed the action of fertilizer sellers to bundle other products while farmers buy fertilizers and said the government should take steps to stop such actions.

The farmers further urged the state government to remove the obstructions and desilt the sub-channels of the Tungabadhra left branch canals in Manvi, Sirwar, Raichur and Sindhanur taluks and release the water on Vaarabandi basis.

Later, they submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister through the district administration.

Sugurayya Math, Dodda Basanagouda Ballatagi, Prabhakar Patil, Mallanna Dinni, Basavaraj Malipatil, Yankappa and others were present.
