England have suffered a major World Cup blow as Tino Livramento has been ruled out with injury
Tino Livramento of England (Getty Images) England suffered a setback on the eve of their World Cup campaign after defender Tino Livramento was ruled out of the tournament with a calf injury, prompting a last-minute change to Thomas Tuchel’s line-up.The Newcastle United full-back picked up an injury in training on Sunday. After further examinations and scans on Monday, the medical staff confirmed that Livramento would not be able to participate in the competition any further.“Follow-up examinations and a medical on Monday unfortunately confirmed that he is unable to play any further part in the England tournament,” the Football Association of England said in a statement. As England prepared for their opening group stage match against Croatia, Tuchel quickly filled the vacancy by calling up Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah. The 26-year-old is expected to join the team at their training facility in Kansas City before traveling with the team.Livrament’s inclusion in the original team was largely due to his ability to operate on both wings. Comfortable at both right-back and left-back, he was seen as an important utility and key reinforcement for Reece James on the right-hand side of the defence.Chalobah has featured primarily as a centre-back for Chelsea in recent years, but he also has experience at right-back, giving England another versatile defensive option heading into the tournament.England are due to travel to Dallas on Wednesday for their World Cup opener against Croatia. Tournament regulations allow teams to change injury-related squads up to 24 hours before the first match, allowing England to bring Chalobah into the squad before the deadline.
