Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met members of India’s women’s World Cup-winning women’s team and described the interaction as a “delight”.
“You all have done a great job…Cricket is not just a game in India, it has become a lifestyle for people. When we do well in cricket, the whole of India feels good, but when we don’t, the whole country is upset,” Modi was heard in a video of the interaction.
In the video, Team India members were seen dressed in formal attire, with big smiles as they met Prime Minister Modi.
The Prime Minister also visited X where he wrote, “Every Indian feels immense pride in Team India’s victory in the World Cup. It was a pleasure to interact with the women’s cricket team.”
When the team met Modi, captain Harmanpreet Kaur recalled an earlier interaction with the Prime Minister.
“I still remember when we met you (PM Modi) in 2017. We didn’t come with a trophy…,” the Indian captain said, recalling the Women in Blue’s 2017 loss to England in the final.
“…but it’s a matter of great honor to be here today with the trophy we’ve worked so hard for for so many years,” she added happily.
Meanwhile, Team India head coach Amol Mazumdar welcomed the team and said that “the daughters of the nation have done brilliantly”.
“They did a tremendous job. Their intensity was the same in every practice. Their hard work paid off,” added Mazumdar.
