The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has recommended the Tamil Nadu government to pay ₹5,000 compensation to a man from Pollachi who was assaulted by police personnel at Mahalingapuram police station in Coimbatore district in 2020 for reporting embezzlement at a local grocery store.
SHRC member V. Kannadasan recommended that an amount of ₹2,000 each be raised from Sub-Inspector C. Sivakumar and Head Constable M. Jagadeesh Prabu and Constables M. Ananthan and K. Selvaganesh that an amount of ₹50,000 each be raised. The commission also recommended that disciplinary proceedings be initiated against them as per the rules.
According to the complaint by J. Krishnakumar, he flagged embezzlement in the grocery store. The policemen colluded with the main accused and lodged a false complaint against him and further assaulted him at the police station. The accused officers have denied the allegations leveled against them.
Having regard to the oral and documentary evidence of the parties as well as the written arguments submitted by them, the Commission stated that the respondents assaulted the complainant and caused him injury. He further stated that the actions of the respondents were a violation of the complainant’s human rights.
