A 36-year-old resident of Secunderabad was duped of ₹2.47 lakh after he received a fraudulent text message purportedly from a DTDC courier claiming that the second delivery attempt of the parcel had failed.
Believing the message to be genuine as he was waiting for the vehicle registration certificate to arrive, he clicked on the link provided in the message. Moments later, his phone froze and several One Time Password (OTP) messages started popping up. Within minutes, he received an alert from his bank that around ₹2.47 crore had been spent on his credit card without his permission.
Realizing that she had been duped, the victim locked her credit card through the banking app and contacted the Kotak Bank helpline to block the card and file a formal complaint.
Cybercrime officials urged citizens to remain vigilant against such scams, which often disguise themselves as courier or delivery updates to trick unsuspecting individuals into clicking on malicious links that compromise personal and banking information.
Victims of cyber fraud are advised to report the incidents immediately through the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or through www.cybercrime.gov.in. Citizens can also call or WhatsApp 8712665171 for urgent assistance.
