Shree Charani moved to the top spot in the T20I rankings after a heroic spell vs Pakistan
Left-arm spinner Shree Charani moved closer to the No.1 spot in the ICC Women’s T20I bowling rankings after her impressive spell against Pakistan. The youngster climbed five places to No.2 after taking figures of 4-0-21-3 in India’s Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match against Pakistan on Sunday, June 14 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
After the win, the Delhi Capitals spinner achieved a career best score of 728 points. Her match-winning spell played a key role in India’s 64-run win over Pakistan. Charani is now just five rating points behind England’s Linsey Smith, who remains in the No.1 position with 733 points.
Deepti Sharma also made significant gains, moving up five places to No.5 after winning the Man of the Match against Pakistan. She recorded best bowling figures from an Indian in the history of the Women’s T20 World Cup where she finished with remarkable figures of 4-0-10-5. Deepti played as India bowled out Pakistan for 106 while defending a target of 171.
HOW CHARANI RATTLED PAKISTAN
Brought into the attack in the eighth match, Charani made an immediate impact for India. After conceding just three runs off her first three deliveries, the left-armer struck in her first over as Saira Jabeen chipped Harmanpreet Kaur’s leading edge at short cover. Charani held firm in her next spell despite Muneeba Ali finding a boundary off the shot.
She came back to remove Natalia Pervaiz in the 13th over. Attempting an inside-out shot after charging down the track, Pervaiz failed to clear extra cover and was caught safely by Harmanpreet. Charani continued to apply pressure with her accurate lines and subtle variations, limiting Pakistan’s chances to score.
Her third wicket came in the 15th over when Rameen Shamim headed to backward point where Shreyanka Patil completed a brilliant catch.
Since making his England debut last year, Charani has impressed with his consistency, picking up 31 wickets from 21 T20Is at an economy rate of 7.52. She also won the Player of the Series award in her first T20I series on English soil.
Charani will look to maintain his momentum when India take on the Netherlands in their Group A encounter on Wednesday, June 17 at Headingley, Leeds.
