Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent candidate against Democrat Zohran Mamdani, has backed away from endorsing US President Donald Trump in the city’s mayoral race. Seeking to downplay Donald Trump’s recent remarks endorsing him in the NYC mayoral race over Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo said: “He didn’t say that. He didn’t say that. He didn’t say that.”
Speaking to reporters in Washington Heights, Andrew Cuomo said, “He called me a bad Democrat. First of all, I happen to be a good Democrat and a proud Democrat and I will remain a proud Democrat.”
Andrew Cuomo has previously rejected the possibility of accepting an endorsement from Donald Trump and has made it clear that he does not want any endorsement from him.
On the eve of New York’s mayoral election, Donald Trump threw his support behind Andrew Cuomo as he hit out at Mamdani, telling voters they “really don’t have a choice.”
He also asked voters not to vote for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, saying a vote for him would mean a vote for “communist” Zohran Mamdani.
The president also threatened to cut federal funding for New York if Zohran Mamdani wins the election.
In a post on Truth Social on Monday evening, November 3, Donald Trump said: “If Communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for mayor of New York, it is highly unlikely that I will contribute federal funds, other than the bare minimum as required.
“I’d much rather see a Democrat with a track record of success WIN than a communist with no experience and a record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE. He was nothing like an assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class, and as mayor of potentially, again, the greatest city in the world, he has NO CHANCE to bring him back to his former glory – And without that, Sli looks a lot better! We need to remember that a lot better! beret!) is a vote for Mamdani, whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you have to vote for him and hope he is capable, Mamdani is not!
Mamdani reacts to Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo
Zohran Mamdani responded to Donald Trump’s unexpected endorsement of Andrew Cuomo on his social media account on X. Sharing a picture with the caption “Trump endorses Andrew Cuomo,” Mamdani joked, “Congratulations Andrew Cuomo. I know how hard you’ve worked on this.”
New York City is set to elect a new mayor on Tuesday as the mayoral race enters its final round, with Indian-born Zohran Kwame Mamdani emerging as the front-runner to take over America’s biggest city.
November 4th is Election Day across the US, polls open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Early voting, which began on October 25, ended on Sunday.
Zohran Mamdani will face independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa on the ballot.
