The police department has initiated several security measures on the ‘Garuda Varadhi’ elevated express corridor in Tirupati following two back-to-back accidents witnessed on the flyover recently.
With both accidents attributed to high speed and reckless driving, the department began to address the issues by setting up roadblocks, installing turn signals and placing radio lights at each turn on the walls.
It may be recalled that two engineering students fell from the top of the flyover to the road below, along with their motorcycle, leading to their sudden death. Less than a week later, another person riding his two-wheeler crashed into a side wall at high speed and died on the spot.
The two incidents, which happened in quick succession, shocked locals and visiting pilgrims as the corridor is specifically meant to give Tirumala-bound devotees a faster exit by helping them avoid local traffic.
Collector S. Venkateswar, Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) Commissioner N. Mourya and Superintendent of Police (SP) L. Subbarayudu jointly initiated an action plan to make the flyover accident-proof.
Mr. Subbarayudu inspected the foolproof arrangements made on the flyover, especially the curve at the accident-prone Lakshmipuram junction. He asked motorists not to compromise on safety aspects and suggested them to wear helmets and maintain an average speed.
