Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said the state government is committed to providing 1% reservation to nomadic communities as part of social justice.
“The government will consider and take action as to how the reservation can be granted. The government does not intend to cause injustice to the community and the government intends to compensate everyone,” the chief minister told a delegation of the nomadic community who met him here. He said the government was trying to provide an internal reservation and the confusion over the matter would be resolved.
The government did not accept the recommendation of a one-member commission headed by former HN judge Nagmohan Das, which recommended 1% reservation to 59 communities, including 49 microscopic communities that are the most backward. Instead, these communities were combined with the backward communities of Lambani, Korama, Koracha and Bhovi for a reservation matrix of 5%. However, the communities argued that the competition for reservation benefits is between unequals and the nomadic communities may not be able to compete with the relatively better off Lambanis and others.
On Friday, community leaders asked the chief minister for a separate 1% reservation for their communities, numbering about 5.2 lakh, a special financial package and setting up of a separate development company for nomadic and semi-nomadic communities.
