The Kozhikode Corporation Council has asked the Election Commission of India to deny the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Kerala ahead of local polls.
The council meeting presided over by Deputy Mayor CP Musafar Ahamed on Friday (October 31, 2025) discussed an adjournment motion moved by opposition leader KC Shobhita. The motion was unanimously supported by the UDF and LDF councilors, while six BJP councilors opposed it.
Ms. Shobhita argued that the SIR was being implemented in such a way that a voter needed to prove that they deserved to be on the voter rolls. On the other hand, BJP councilor CS Sathyabhama said that the voter list has Bangalees and Rohingya refugees in many places and it is necessary to weed them out and ensure that only Indians are on the list. The deputy mayor had earlier refused permission to another adjournment motion moved by BJP councilor Navya Haridas.
The meeting discussed solid waste management at various levels above submissions. Congress councilor SK Aboobakker pointed out that the double dustbins kept in different parts of the city were overflowing with household waste and suggested that they be removed. Health Standing Committee Chairman S. Jayasree pointed out that there is a need to change the public’s attitude towards the issue of dustbins.
The waste management fiasco on the opening day of the Kozhikode beach food street was revealed by BJP councilor Saritha Parayeri. The paramedic explained that this happened when a large crowd on the inauguration day did not care to use the trash cans on site and scattered trash all over the beach. He said that a Food Street Management Committee had been formed and that cleaning staff had been deployed in three shifts round the clock to manage waste on Food Street. Besides, the corporation planned to rope in an agency to handle the matter more efficiently, he added.
IUML Councilor K. Moideen Koya asked about the status of dredging work on the Kallai River. At one of its last meetings before the vote of the local authorities, the council approved over 170 agenda items.
