Power Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said that more than 98% of power restoration work has been completed in areas affected by Cyclone Montha.
Speaking to the media at his camp office in Tadepalli on Friday, Mr. Ravi Kumar said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had foreseen the impact of the cyclone and immediately warned the administration, public representatives and citizens to remain prepared. This helped mitigate the impact, the minister said.
Around 1,500 personnel from three DISCOMs have been deployed on special duty in the affected regions. Senior officials have been posted to the worst affected areas of Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam and Bapatla to ensure that people do not face any inconvenience.
The storm caused extensive damage to power poles, wires and transformers. A total of 12,500 new electric poles were installed, 2,900 km of wires were replaced and nearly 3,000 transformers were repaired/reinstalled, he added.
Power supply in areas like Nellore, Kavali and Machilipatnam was temporarily shut off as a precaution and was restored immediately after conditions improved.
The minister mentioned that electricity supply to households was fully restored across the state, while agriculture and waterworks were in the process of restoration during the next 48 hours.
He commended the employees of the power companies for their selfless work during the cyclone and pointed out that many of them were on duty for 48 hours continuously without rest.
