United States President Donald Trump has categorically rejected trade talks with Canada weeks after Ontario aired an ad by former US President Ronald Reagan criticizing the tariffs. But Donald Trump claimed he “really likes” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, but what Ontario did “was wrong.”
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Donald Trump said: “I really like him a lot. But what they did was wrong.” So “no,” the discussion won’t resume, Trump said, even though Carney “has apologized for what they did with the ad because it was a false ad.”
The US is moving ahead with its decision to halt trade talks with Canada, even as Ontario withdraws an ad that sparked tensions. However, the ad was allowed to air over the weekend, further angering Donald Trump.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the ad was released to reach an American audience and “we achieved our goal.”
“Our intention has always been to start a conversation about the kind of economy Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses,” said Doug Ford.
More tariffs in Canada
The Trump administration, which ended trade talks with Canada citing “misleading and deceptive” advertising, also imposed additional 10 percent tariffs on Canadian imports.
He accused Canadian authorities of using parts of Ronald Reagan’s speech without permission, saying: “Canada has been caught, red-handed, running a fraudulent ad for Ronald Reagan’s tariff speech. The Reagan Foundation said it “created an advertising campaign using selective audio and video of President Ronald Reagan. The ad does not represent and does not obtain permission to use and rename the President’s radio address.” The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is reviewing its legal options in this matter.”
“The sole purpose of this FRAUD was Canada’s hope that the United States Supreme Court would come to their “rescue” regarding the tariffs they have used for years to hurt the United States. Now the United States is able to fight back against Canada’s high and exorbitant tariffs (as well as those of the rest of the world!). Ronald Reagan LOVED tariffs for national security and economic purposes, but Canada said no!”
“Their ad should have been pulled IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series because they knew it was a SCAM,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, at the summit in Malaysia, Mark Carney mentioned that Canada is ready to resume trade talks with Washington.
