The United Democratic Students’ Front (UDSF), a coalition of the Kerala Students’ Union and the Muslim Students’ Federation, has decided to boycott the Calicut University Union Students’ Union (DSU) polls scheduled for Friday, October 31.
The election, which had previously been held on October 10, was annulled after allegations of procedural flaws.
A release from the UDSF campus committee on Thursday said a police complaint was lodged against its candidates, holding them responsible for allegedly destroying university property during the election. According to the recommendations of the JM Lyngdoh Committee, if candidates contesting in student union elections are found to have been involved in violence, they may be disqualified.
UDSF leaders alleged that the police complaint filed by Satheesh Palanki, who was the returning officer for the elections held earlier, and VA Shahana, the DSU president, was an attempt to disqualify their candidates in case they win. They also alleged that Mr. Palanki and Mr. Shahana were trying to cover up the violations they had resorted to during the previous elections.
Meanwhile, functionaries of the Students Federation of India (SFI) University Campus Committee said in a report that the UDSF is running away from the elections because it is certain that it will be defeated in the process. The SFI leaders also alleged that UDSF leaders manipulated teachers and damaged election materials on October 10.
