Google Gemini is getting a new extension that will allow the app to play and search for songs from the Spotify app. The new feature will be powered by the Gemini Artificial Intelligence (AI) Assistant on Android compatible devices. This way users can link their Spotify account to their Google account and use an AI-powered virtual assistant to ask about music, albums, artists, playlists, and more. However, some app-based features will require a subscription to Spotify Premium.
Gemini gets Spotify extension
In its support page, Google details the new extension of the Gemini app. It is worth noting that this demanding capability of the AI assistant comes six months after the tech giant launched an extension of integrated YouTube music capabilities. It is worth noting that if the user connects Spotify and YouTube Music at the same time and does not specify an application in its request, Gemini will use the last music service used.
The company stressed that the Spotify extension is not available in Geapini by Google Message, Gemini Web App or iOS App. It won’t work either unless the Gemini app on Android is set to English and the user has Gemini Apps activity turned on. Additionally, if a user gets a Spotify Premium subscription, they can only play specific songs on the app.
With this new feature, users ask the AI assistant to play songs, albums or playlists and ask for music or activities. Additionally, they can search for songs by the artist’s name and lyrics, or find playlists based on genre, emotions, or activities. However, Gemini is currently unable to create Spotify playlists or broadcasts.
To connect Spotify to the Gemini app, users will first need to log in to their Spotify account and then link to their Google account. Once finished, users can open the Gemini app, click on their profile picture, and then go to Extended. There, they can switch manually on the Spotify option.
Despite Google’s announcement of the extension, it can take up to two weeks to make it available to all users around the world.
