Vijayawada Division of South Central Railway (SCR) has ensured passenger safety, sanitation and community preparedness during Cyclone Month by operating on full alert mode. Officials have mobilized men and machinery to cope with any emergencies arising out of the cyclone in train operations, an SCR report said.
Trains were terminated wherever the situation required and passengers were accommodated in other trains. Monsoon reserves on wheels have been strategically placed to respond quickly to any obstacle. Anemometers were installed to record wind speeds in real time, while water level monitoring systems actively monitored conditions on bridges and vulnerable sites.
Vijayawada Division mobilized 25 excavators, 24 wagons loaded with machine-sewn sandbags and 24 wagons of boulders, which were positioned at four strategic locations for immediate deployment. In addition, 650 steel cribs were loaded onto BRN wagons, 450 contract workers were made ready for emergency recovery and 475 trackers were deployed for monsoon patrolling and spotting of track vulnerabilities.
Various emergency materials were prepared at key locations and the Railway Protection Branch played a key role in ensuring safety and order at all stations by maintaining round-the-clock CCTV surveillance throughout the railway facility. The health department, environment department and household management have implemented extensive sanitation and hygiene measures.
Divisional Railway Manager Mohit Sonakiya said teams of officials and workers showed remarkable commitment by working round the clock during Cyclone Montha. Every department from business, operations, engineering to health and security contributed to the protection of both passengers and railway property. Timely dissemination of information by the public relations officer ensured that there was no confusion between the public and stakeholders, the report said.
