Hailing Abhishek Sharma as a superstar in T20Is, Michael Clarke said the left-handed batsman is ready to represent India in all three formats of the game. After impressing in the IPL, Abhishek found himself in the Indian team and hit the ground running. The southpaw scored a hundred in his second T20I match and went from strength to strength.
Abhishek holds the record for the highest individual score by an Indian in T20Is and he was highest score during India’s Asia Cup in UAE. The 25-year-old has scored 314 runs in seven matches with a strike rate of 200 at an average of 44.85. He also scored three fifties.
Speaking on the Beyond23 cricket podcast, Clarke said he thinks Abhishek will be the best bowler in the T20I series against Australia and feels he just needs a platform to shine in international cricket. Clarke said that he is looking forward to Abhishek doing well in the series.
“I’ll go for Abhishek Sharma. Now I think he’s ready to play all three formats for India. It’s tough, you only fit 11 players and 6 batsmen, but I reckon he’s an absolute superstar in that format. He’s done very well for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, but I reckon he just needs a chance to shine in international cricket.”
“He’s opening the bat, a left-hander, he’s got all the shots. I can’t wait to watch him. So I think he’ll be the best run-scorer in the series,” Clarke said.
ABHISHEK’S ENTRY IN T20IS
Abhishek’s rise has seen him become the highest-scoring men’s batsman in T20Is, scoring 931 runs. The southpaw credited Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav’s handling of him as the main reason for his rise.
“Obviously, if you want to play with such high risk, then there are setbacks. But the way they (Gambhir and Suryakumar) treated me at that time, the way they (Gambhir and Suryakumar) spoke to me at that time, I think that’s why to play like that, because it’s very important that you have that kind of support in the team,” Abhishek said.
India will face Australia in the first T20I on October 29.
