Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday directed officials to immediately evacuate residents of coastal areas threatened by Cyclone Montha to designated rehabilitation centres.
He later held a teleconference with district collectors, SPs and senior officials to review the state’s preparedness for the impending cyclone. The chief minister stressed that the intensity of the storm was expected to increase from Tuesday and directed officials to intensify awareness campaigns and precautionary measures.
Mr. Naidu directed that quality food and medical services be provided at all relief centers and that officers in charge be appointed to oversee coordination. He directed that real-time data from the RTGS system be continuously monitored and that reservoirs, canals and dams be secured against tampering. He also called for continuous monitoring of sewage systems to prevent water stagnation and appealed to citizens to stay indoors until the storm passes.
Directing district administrations to take precautionary measures against possible landslides in hilly areas like Vijayawada, Mangalagiri and Visakhapatnam, the chief minister said Andhra Pradesh’s Cyclone Montha preparedness and response model should serve as a benchmark for managing future natural disasters.
Mr. Naidu stressed the need to protect drinking water sources from contamination and maintain emergency medical services in all vulnerable areas. He also ordered that schools and educational institutions in the affected districts remain closed until conditions improve, asserting that there should be no loss of life or property under any circumstances.
He emphasized that the district collectors must take full responsibility of supervising rescue and relief operations and urged the officials to mobilize volunteers to support the administrative efforts. “The entire government apparatus should work with dedication to effectively counter Cyclone Montha,” he said, warning officials against complacency.
