Nandyal District Collector Rajakumari Ganiya has asked the district administration to be on high alert in view of the possibility of heavy rains lashing the district in the coming three days under the influence of Cyclone Montha.
The Collector said there was a possibility that the area would bear the impact of the cyclone and asked the farmers to take necessary measures to avoid crop losses. She called on farmers to temporarily postpone plucking onions, corn and tomatoes from their fields. There is a possibility that maize prices will fall due to excess moisture, she added, asking traders to buy maize at the rate set by the government.
Stating that sanitation works are not being carried out satisfactorily, especially in Atmakur village, the Collector asked the officials of the Municipal Department to take steps to maintain the situation. It mandated the officials to ensure the supply of chlorinated water and take over the chlorination in summer reservoirs and RO operations. She warned against seizing private RO plants that do not comply with standards.
Ms. Rajakumari also asked officials to shift people living in dilapidated and old buildings to safer places and identify vulnerable spots where there is a possibility of canals and tanks being breached. She wanted the officials to prepare sandbags at these places as a precaution.
Meanwhile, Kurnool District Collector A. Siri reviewed arrangements to deal with heavy rains in the next two days. She asked the officials of Power, Roads and Buildings and Irrigation to prepare men and material to be sent to Tirupati and Nellore districts which are likely to be more affected.
She also asked civil supplies, horticulture and animal husbandry officials to maintain stocks of essential commodities, medicines, water packets, biscuits, bread, vegetables, milk, eggs and also cattle fodder ready for movement to Nellore and Tirupati districts.
