Yadgir Zilla Panchayat has launched Girinadu Matsya Kranti under Matsya Sanjeevini along with Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) to contribute to efforts to empower rural women through fisheries.
This flagship initiative has been taken up by the state under the Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (KSRLPS) to harness inland fisheries for livelihood diversification and economic empowerment of women through sustainable fisheries.
The program seeks to mobilize and empower Women’s Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Gram Panchayat Federations (GPLFs) to take an active role in fish farming and marketing using locally available resources through Gram Panchayat tanks.
Matsya Sanjeevini aims to empower rural women to manage fisheries as profitable micro-enterprises, thereby improving their social and economic status.
This community-based approach not only increases the income of SHG members but also contributes to local economic growth while ensuring nutritional security through affordable protein-rich fish production.
As many as 1,45,000 different species of fish, including katla, rohu, mrigal, common carp and silver, were released in the four identified reservoirs at Baligera, Kannikal, Passpol and Balichakra villages in the district.
Four more tanks in Ullesugur, Konkal, Shivapur and Kalbelagundi villages have been identified for implementation of the plan in the coming days.
“The main objectives of this scheme are to create additional livelihood opportunities for women SHGs and federations, increase employment and income of rural households through hinterland agriculture and improve the economic capacity, social status and quality of life of rural women,” Zilla Panchayat CEO Lavish Ordia told The Hindu.
Women should take advantage of the scheme to improve their economic growth, Mr. Ordia said, adding that Matsya Sanjeevini has emerged as a movement across the state and efforts are underway to roll it out in the district, transforming lives “one tank, one effort, one dream at a time”.
