Two people were killed and six others injured after a fire broke out at a restaurant in Dattagalli on Mysuru’s Outer Ring Road on Monday.
The flames broke out on the roof terrace of a two-storey building near Netaji Circle in Kuvempunagar police station, which appeared to have a kitchen area as well as a dining area.
An official from the Fire and Rescue Department said the department received an alarm around 3:15 pm and immediately dispatched fire tenders to the spot.
Several customers who were trapped in the rooftop dining room were rescued by fire and rescue workers using ladders.
“We rescued around 15 customers using ladders and shifted them to the hospital. Later, we found two dead employees during the search,” the official said.
Most of the injured suffered minor burns, according to officials.
A statement by City Police Commissioner Seem Latkar said preliminary investigation revealed that there was a short circuit in the electric bulbs/LEDs installed for decoration at Maara Restaurant. The fire apparently spread quickly to surrounding decorative material, the statement said, adding that further investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing.
The deceased have been identified as Sahin (26), a head chef at the restaurant, hailing from Manipur, and Prakash, an employee from Nepal. Both succumbed to burn injuries, police said.
The injured include Sona, 25, from Mandya, Ramesh, 25, from Bengaluru, both customers, besides Mahadev Prasad and Avinash, 22, both managers at the restaurant, and Prajwal, 26, and Yoga, 24, both employees of the restaurant. The condition of the injured, who were taken to hospital, is said to be “stable”.
Fire and rescue officials said the presence of highly flammable materials in the restaurant contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
Firefighters from Saraswathipuram and Hebbal fire stations brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading further.
Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Sundar Raj visited the spot and reviewed the situation.
Former minister GT Deve Gowda, who represents the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency where the restobar is located, visited the place. He said both the deceased were believed to be natives of other states and that officials had been instructed to inform their families.
Mr. Gowda also said that he would take up the issue of compensation for the next of kin of the deceased with Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
