The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg expects to get CCTV footage and witness statements from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) within 10 days.
Garg died while swimming off an island in Singapore on September 19, hours before he was scheduled to perform at the Northeast India Festival there.
Two SIT members headed by Special Director General of Police (Criminal Investigation Branch) Munna Prasad Gupta left for Singapore on October 20 and met the five-member SPF team the next day.
“The meeting was fruitful. We exchanged information on the ongoing investigation,” he told reporters on Friday (October 24, 2025), a day after the SIT team returned to Guwahati.
SPF shares obituary
He said the SPF had shared Garg’s postmortem report prepared in Singapore with the SIT through the Indian High Commission. “We told the Singapore police that we needed their legal assistance because we wanted to complete our investigation within the time frame. They said they would help us by staying within Singapore’s visa legal system,” Mr Gupta said.
He further said that the SIT had visited several locations in Singapore related to the case and was conducting other legal activities in the country. “We have sought the help of the Singapore police to get CCTV footage from the hotel (where Garg was staying) as the laws of the country prohibit us from taking it directly from the hotel management. The Singapore police have assured us that they will give a positive response within 10 days,” Mr Gupta said.
The SIT had earlier asked the Singaporean authorities through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty to provide the statements of some Singaporean citizens deemed vital to the investigation. “The Singapore police will record their statements and contact us within 10 days,” Gupta said, declining to say what the investigation team has found in the case so far.
He also said that the SIT will file the chargesheet in the court within the time limit specified in the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. “If necessary, we will summon the Assamese emigrants from Singapore who were with Garg during his last moments,” he added.
Statements of more than 10 expatriates have been recorded in Assam.
