The Agriculture Department on Friday issued technical advisories to farmers for recovery of paddy and other crops damaged due to recent heavy rains across the state, especially in the southern coastal districts, as advised by Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University.
The department officials said the paddy fields, cultivated in 15.58 lakh hectares, were in various stages, from flowering to harvesting, while the late sown crops were in the stage of tiller initiation and starting.
In Bapatla, Palnadu and Nandyal, the crops were in tiller and tiller stage, while the crops in the Krishna and Godavari delta regions were mostly in the flowering to harvest stage.
Farmers were advised to ensure rapid drainage of standing water, support dormant crops and apply fungicides such as ‘propiconazole’ to prevent grain discoloration and fungal diseases. A 5% saline spray was recommended for crops showing pre-harvest germination. Late sown crops should receive a booster dose of urea and MOP to stimulate growth.
In south coast areas, submerged nurseries should be treated with urea and potash and carbendazim or carbendazim plus mancozeb to prevent seedling rot. Cotton and groundnut growers were advised to control leaf spot with hexaconazole or carbendazim and prevent boll rot with copper oxychloride and plantomycin sprays. For pearl millet, a common salt solution can prevent the grain from germinating at harvest, they said.
Officials stressed that prompt drainage, timely fungicide applications and balanced fertilization are critical to rejuvenating affected crops and maintaining quality. Farmers have been urged to follow these guidelines to mitigate losses and restore productivity.
