Delhi has a “red” warning for thunderstorms and rain
Delhi’s weather took a sudden turn on Monday afternoon after a dust storm accompanied by strong winds swept through the city, prompting a red warning for thunderstorms and rain from the Met Agency.
A red alert means that you need to take action and follow the safety instructions issued by the authorities.
The IMD said a dust storm followed by thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall, lightning and gusty winds of 70-90 kmph were very likely across the capital.
Palam recorded winds of 50 knots (92 km/h) at 2:30 p.m.
Light to moderate rainfall is expected in several parts of the city, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 60-70 km/h, with gusts up to 80 km/h.
Officials advised people to stay indoors during storms, avoid shelters under trees and stay away from power poles and waterlogged areas.
Weather experts attributed the sudden change to the western disturbance currently affecting the Himalayan region, PTI reported. They said its impact is likely to weaken from Tuesday, after which temperatures are expected to rise again.
Meanwhile, IMD scientist Naresh Kumar told ANI that in the past few days, there has been continuous change in the weather in northwest India due to the western disturbance.
“An orange alert is in force in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan today due to a western disturbance over northern Pakistan. Light rain is expected in these areas. Wind speed will be 50-60 km/h and dust storm may occur in Rajasthan. Red alert for light rain with wind speed 70-90 km/h has been issued in Delhi,” he said.
Kumar also noted that another Western Disturbance may affect Northwest India from June 18, which may bring rain. “We have forecast light rain for Delhi on 20th and 21st…”
