Monsoon activity remains low in Andhra Pradesh due to El Niño conditions

Monsoon activity in Andhra Pradesh remains muted so far, with 17 out of 28 districts reporting deficient rainfall between June 1 and June 14. The Southwest Monsoon arrived in the state on June 6 and is expected to cover the remaining parts of the state in the next three days. However, many districts continue to experience intense heat due to active El Nino conditions.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) – Amaravati has predicted light showers at isolated areas (one or two places) in the three regions of South Coastal AP (SCAP) and Rayalaseema for the next week. A few areas in the North Coastal AP region may also receive light showers. However, thunderstorm activity is expected to continue across the state this week.
According to the IMD, the trough stretches from the west-central Bay of Bengal off the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh to southern Tamil Nadu, across the southwestern Bay of Bengal, at heights between 3.1 and 4.5 km above mean sea level. This trough may bring light showers to the State.
Devanabanda in Kurnool district received a maximum of 50 mm of rainfall on Sunday (June 14). Pachipenta in Srikakulam district and Nagara Panchayat Office area of Nellimarla in Vizianagaram district recorded 38.5 mm while Gurla in Vizianagaram district recorded 36.5 mm.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, likely at isolated places in Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Palnadu, Prakasam, Markapuram, Nellore and Tirupatial districts on Monday (June 15).
