Two excise constables were injured when they were attacked by a group of villagers allegedly involved in brewing illicit liquor at Alipur Thanda in Kadiri mandal of Sri Sathya Sai district on Wednesday.
According to the Kadiri police, the excise team launched the raids following a tip-off about large-scale illegal liquor production in the village. During the inspection, a mob of local residents, who were said to be engaged in distilling country liquor, confronted the officials and attacked two constables with sticks.
Injured constables Venkata Prasad and Venkata Narayana were taken to Kadiri Government Hospital for treatment.
Senior excise officials condemned the attack and warned that strict legal action would be taken against those involved. Acting on the complaint, the police deployed additional forces in the village and adjoining areas to prevent further tension. A case has been registered and a special team has been formed to identify and arrest the accused.
