Police have arrested three persons for allegedly raping a 30-year-old West Bengal woman along with their accomplices before stealing her valuables at Gangondanahalli in Bengaluru on October 21.
According to the police, the accused along with three others barged into the woman’s house, threatened her with dire consequences and demanded money and valuables including two mobile phones and ₹25,000 cash. While three of the accused allegedly raped her, the others stood guard.
The woman filed a complaint, after which a police team headed by Police Superintendent CK Baba rushed to the scene, assessed the situation and tracked down two of the accused within a few hours during a nighttime intervention. Efforts are on to trace the other accused who are absconding.
The victim was later taken to a hospital for medical treatment and is said to be recovering.
The accused were identified as Karthik, Glen Verghese and Suyoga aged 22 to 25 hours.
Investigation revealed that the victim worked at a salon and lived in rented accommodation. It used to get a lot of customers, which irritated the other tenants.
One of the tenants, a teacher, sought help from her student after repeated complaints to the landlord did not help.
Police said the student sought the help of his friends, who are local hoodlums, to intimidate the woman and impress the teacher.
The accused barged into the home, threatened the woman, raped her before taking her valuables, including cash and mobile phones, according to police. There were two women and two men in the house and the accused allegedly assaulted the other women who tried to resist, locking the man in the bathroom before dragging the victim into the room and raping them one by one.
The police, acting on a tip-off, rushed to the spot and, considering the seriousness of the situation, formed three special teams and sent them in different directions according to technical details. The police team tracked down the accused one by one in a night operation.
The police charged the accused under section 70 (gang rape), 127 (wrongful imprisonment), 118 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 311 (robbery or theft committed with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 190 (illegal investigation 24) and BNSchi.
“The police have now taken the accused into custody to ascertain their criminal background while they are trying to track down the remaining accused,” Mr Baba said.
