Commercial flight operations at the Noida International Airport in Jewar began on Monday, with the first flight from Lucknow landing at the newly constructed facility. According to news agency PTI, domestic carrier IndiGo has started its inaugural flights from the airport.

The inaugural flight was scheduled to depart from Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport at 7:05 a.m. and arrive at Jewar Airport at 8:05 a.m. on June 15, the statement said.

Farmers joined the inaugural flight

On the occasion, 170 farmers and agricultural workers from Jewar region, including 20 women, traveled on the inaugural flight of the airport as a gesture of appreciation to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the development of the area.

Airport officials said the first scheduled commercial service from the airport will subsequently operate to Bengaluru.

The airport received its license in March

The airport received an airport license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on 6

Located in the Gautam Buddh Nagar area of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area, the airport is considered one of the flagship infrastructure projects of the Uttar Pradesh government.

Authorities believe the facility will further strengthen the state’s position as a major hub for aviation, logistics and regional connectivity.

The expansion is planned in four phases

The project covers an area of approximately 1,334 hectares and is planned in four phases. According to official estimates, annual passenger handling capacity is expected to increase to 30 million by 2031, 50 million by 2036 and 70 million by 2040.

Citing officials, PTI said the final expansion plan envisages five runways and an annual passenger capacity of 225 million, which would make it among the world’s largest airports.

Connectivity and employment are expected to increase

The airport is expected to serve passengers from Western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.

IndiGo plans to connect the airport in phases with more than 16 destinations, including Lucknow, Hyderabad, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Srinagar and Pantnagar.

The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year.

The state government estimates that the project will create around 100,000 direct and indirect jobs in the coming years and attract significant investment in industry, logistics, warehousing, hospitality and allied sectors.
