
Today’s weather in Chennai: Heavy rains lashed Chennai on Tuesday along with several other districts in Tamil Nadu as the IMD predicted that isolated places in the state are likely to experience more rains.
Weather in Tamil Nadu remained rainy today as Northeast Monsoon intensified across the state.
Chief Minister MK Stalin along with top officials reviewed the situation on Tuesday and directed them to take precautionary measures in view of heavy rains in Chennai and other places.
Waterlogging was reported from several areas in Rameswaram, while 250 cusecs of water from the Cooum barrage was released in Avadi and Pudhuchathiram following heavy rains.
Chennai Weather: IMD issues red alert in 8 districts
Following heavy rains and gloomy weather in Chennai, the IMD has issued a red alert in eight districts of Tamil Nadu.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram, an official of the regional meteorological center said.
“Heavy rain is likely over the entire northern coastal belt, but extremely heavy rain is expected in the above areas,” the official said.
Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari have been placed under orange alert.

A low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal
Rains in Chennai and weather in Tamil Nadu are caused by a low pressure area that formed over southwest Bay of Bengal at 5.30 pm today under the influence of an upper cyclonic circulation over south Andaman Sea and southeast Bay of Bengal, RMC Chennai director B Amudha said.

“It is likely to move northwest and concentrate into a depression over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal over north Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra by the afternoon of October 22, 2025,” she told ANI.
“Yesterday’s well-marked low pressure area over southeast Arabian Sea persisted over the same area at 8:30 am IST today,” an IMD official added.
This low pressure area is likely to slowly move westward and concentrate into a depression during the next 24 hours. The depression stage is likely to become a deep depression, she said.

“We have issued an extremely heavy rainfall warning for the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu for today and tomorrow. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from October 21 to 25,” Amudha added.
Tamil Nadu Weather: CM Stalin Takes stock
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin took stock of the weather situation in Chennai and held a meeting with District Collectors through video conferencing
He ordered them to set up relief camps for the rain-affected people.

Stalin asked officials to have essentials including food, drinking water and medicines ready for the rain-affected people in Tamil Nadu.
To mitigate rain damage, the CM advised the teams to be ready with necessary equipment such as JCB machines, boats, motor pumps, trucks and saws.
