Four passengers, including a child, who jumped off a train after hearing of a fire, were run over by another train in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district on Sunday (Jun 14, 2026), officials said.

According to North Central Railway officials, the incident occurred around 4.15 pm between Hetampur and Dholpur sections of Jhansi railway division after a passenger in a general coach pulled the alarm chain of the Khajuraho-Udaipur Intercity Express.

The dead included three women and a child, identified as Virma Devi, 60, a resident of Rajasthan’s Bikaner district; Shakuntala Devi, 60, Afreen, 35, and her four-year-old son Asad Khan, all residents of Agra district in Uttar Pradesh.

“According to preliminary information, when the train was stopped, some passengers got off and moved to an adjacent railway line,” North Central Railway said in a statement, adding that some passengers who were on a nearby track were hit by the Firozpur-Seoni Patalkot Express.

“After receiving information about the incident, officials of the Railway Administration, Railway Protection Corps (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP) and local administration immediately rushed to the spot. Necessary assistance was provided to the affected passengers,” the statement said.

The track said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause and circumstances of the incident.

“The above tragic incident took place after the train was stopped by pulling the alarm chain; individuals got out and tried to stand on the tracks or cross the tracks at a dangerous place. The reason for pulling the alarm chain is yet to be ascertained. A committee of JAG-level officers has been constituted to investigate the matter thoroughly,” said Manoj Kumar Singh, PRO, a passenger from the train station while alighting at the railway station, Jhansi. in the middle.

Nadeem Khan, Afreen’s husband, said he and his family jumped off the train after some people started talking about the fire on the train.

“Someone spread a rumor that there was a fire on the train, so the train was stopped suddenly. People started jumping off the train, so we also jumped off. But my older child stayed on the train, so I went to check on him while my wife and younger son were outside. Then another train approached and ran over my wife and son,” he told the news agency.
